Increased robustness for fluidic self-assembly

چکیده
Self-assembly methods have been developed at the microand nanoscale to create functional structures from subelements stochastically dispersed in a fluid. Self-assembly paradigms have limitations in terms of achievable complexity of the final structure, ability to perform error correction, and scalability. Fluidic self-assembly attempts to overcome these limitations by incorporating a controlled flow structure and/or complex geometric interactions to improve the assembly rate and the specificity of the final positioning. Since the initial position and orientation of a subelement in a stochastic system are indeterminate, the most robust of these schemes are those for which the dependence on the initial condition will be the weakest. In this paper we develop an analytical/numerical model for the fluid forces and torques on a two-dimensional subelement involved in a fluidic self-assembly process and describe the translational and rotational motions of the element due to these forces. We use this model to determine optimal subelement shapes and flow conditions that lead to successful assembly over the broadest range of initial conditions. We quantify the degree to which assembly has been successful by introducing two docking parameters that are descriptive of how close the final subelement position is to the ideal case. Robust self-assembly schemes were developed for the assembly of different tile shapes. This approach to evaluate a self-assembly process based on the final subelement position can be applied to other fluidic self-assembly techniques. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Guided and fluidic self-assembly of microstructures using railed microfluidic channels.
Fluidic self-assembly is a promising pathway for parallel fabrication of devices made up of many small components. Here, we introduce 'railed microfluidics' as an agile method to guide and assemble microstructures inside fluidic channels. The guided movement of microstructures in microfluidic channels was achieved by fabricating grooves ('rails') on the top surface of the channels and also crea...

A self aligned nano scale gap between multiple metal layers has been fabricated using a newly developed technique of controlled undercut and metallization (CUM), and applied for the assembly of an individual carbon nanotube (CNT). The new method enables conventional optical lithography to fabricate nano-gap electrodes and self aligned patterns with nano scale precision. Individual CNTs were ass...

A major challenge in fluidic assembly is the dynamically programmable fabrication of arbitrary geometries from basic components. Current approaches require predetermination of either the assembly machinery or the component interfaces for the specific target geometries. We present an alternative concept that exploits self-assembly forces locally but directs these forces globally, allowing fabric...

The heterogeneous integration of GaAs HEMTs on a polyimide-covered AlN ceramic substrate was demonstrated using a fluidic self-assembly (FSA) technique. We used thin device blocks for the FSA, which have various advantages. In particular, they can reduce the drain-source capacitance Cds of the assembled HEMTs if the substrate has a low dielectric constant. This is a novel kind of semiconductor-...
